Daisy and Callie's Recipes

With all of the bad press commercial pet food has gotten lately, I decided to try some recipes and make my own dog food. I had a few trials and errors but in the end, found things that the dog really loves. She licks her dish clean and I know what she's eating is healthy. I'll be adding more recipes here as I find ones that work out well for me.

Rice and Chicken Dinner

INGREDIENTS

  • 6-8 Chicken Breasts. I get large bags of frozen chicken tenders at Costco.

  • 1 bag rice in a cooking bag - it's less mess when cooking.

  • 1 bag frozen mixed veggies. I use carrots, broccoli, leaks, and snowpeas.

  • 1/4 tsp minced garlic

PREPARATION

  • Cook chicken breasts in microwave for about 10 min or until done. I use a paper plate to eliminate dishes.

  • Cook rice as per instructions on box, then run cold water over the rice bag to cool it down faster.

  • Use about half a bag of veggies. Microwave until almost thawed. Again, use a paper plate.

  • Chop up veggies and chicken into small pieces. Mix veggies, rice, chicken, and garlic all together in a bowl. I've heard the garlic keeps fleas away.

Now that we have all these delicious meals, it's time to freeze them. I use the small snack size Ziplock bags. I also have a food scale and measure out 2 ounces into each bag. This usually yields about 12 bags. Then I flatten the bag and squish out all the air and freeze. To server, pop in microwave for about 30 seconds and you have a great fresh meal for your puppy.

This is a quick and easy meal and very nutritious for your dog.

Puppy Cookies

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 small jars strained baby food meat (beef, chicken, turkey, liver)

  • 1 jar baby food cooked carrots or sweet potatoes

  • 1/2 cup Wheat Germ

  • 1/2 cup dry milk

  • 1/2 tsp garlic power or 1/4 tsp minced garlic

PREPARATION

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees

  • Place dry ingredients in a bowl and mix.

  • Add the two jars of meat and one jar of veggies and stir well.

  • Drop cookies on greased sheet and bake for about 15 minutes. Makes about 30 small cookies.

If your mixture is too "runny", add a bit more wheat germ and dry milk. Store cookies in refrigerator when cool. Make a double batch and freeze part of them. These make delicious treats for your precious pet.
